The Hidden Temple (Part 3)

With the words of the spirit of Jennyson fresh in their minds, the party moved down the crumbling stairs and into the dungeon below. Moline Dorr leading the way, intercepting many of the deadly traps that long lay dormant.

A long hall way, filled with doors, met the party as they skirted past a pit trap and rounded the next corner. They moved slowly, expertly checking each room as they passed. A door to the north revealed yet another circuit of doors. For Balfor, this proved too much. He bolted down the hallway singing at the top of his Kender lungs opening every door as he passed it. CRASH! The floor tumbled away beneat him, dropping him into a deep chasm. As he recovered his senses (if that's possible for a Kender) he noticed a fiery mass looming near him. A living fireball!

The rest of the party rushed down the corridor after the blasted Kender. The pit was too deep and they watched in horror (well, most of them were horrified. Okay, maybe one of them.) as the fireball engulfed the dazed Kender. Gremag unleashed his wicked bow upon the creature, but to no avail. The quick thinking Ulfgar summoned the power of Reorx and dominated the fiery beast, holding it at bay while the others made a quick rescue.

The rest of the lower temple proved mostly empty, save for two dirt golems who made their home in the southern section. They proved little match for the experience group, however.

The only remaining section of the the temple was the top floor. Inevitably, the party would stumble upon the lair of the feared lich.

The Hidden Temple (Part 2)

Tentacled forms, hovering amidst supernatural shadows floated in from all sides. The party was quickly surrounded and they scrambled to avoid the vile creatures. Ulfgar and Liawyn brought forth their holy symbols and called out to the creatures to be gone. Several fled immediately, shrieking their protests as they tried to get away from the clerics. Those that remained felt the wrath of Gremag's bow. From behind the curtain the group could hear Balfor, frantically struggling, as he attempted to escape the clutches of the beast that had grabbed him. There were too many tentacles, too confusing; he just couldn't seem to escape.

With the power of their deities backing them, Ulfgar and Liawyn finally drove the remainder of the creatures away. The group quickly moved through the curtain to rescue the struggling Kender and his captor fled to join its companions. With time to regroup, the party prepared for the return of the shadowy beasts, and they dispatched them with practiced efficiency.

A quick search of the area revealed an evil altar in a small alcove to the north. This altar was inscribed with a many headed dragon that looked similar to the portal through which the party arrived. The clerics decided that a cleansing ritual would be too costly in time, and so the party decided to move on. They moved west into the curtained room, while Balfor decided East would be more fun.

The Kender discovered a room that could even make his fearlessness waver. It was filled with tools of torture and the remains of past residence. In a corner, a bodiless form floated just off the ground. It moaned in agony, crying out to be free. Balfor quickly determined that the others should not miss out on this fun so he ran to fetch the rest of the group, dragging them, grumbling, back to his discovery.

The ghost was in mid-moan as the party entered, and the group hesitated. Balfor, however, boldly approached the ghost and began to talk to it. He asked it all sorts of questions: What it was like to be dead? Could it float like that forever? And could it break glass with a load moan? Luckily, Ulfgar had slapped a hand over the Kender's mouth to let the spirit get a word in edgewise. The ghost was that of Trugot Jennyson, former acolyte and servant of the high priest of the temple.

Trugot revealed to the companions that an evil lich, Avon Delray, ruled over this temple. Avon was once a great priest of the temple who was betrayed by his fellow priests and was murdered, only to rise as a powerful undead: a lich. Avon believed Trugot to be part of the conspiracy against him and had tortured and killed Trugot for his betrayal. Trugot, was truly innocent, however, powerless to stop Avon's murder. With another pitiful moan he begs the party to free him from his earthy bonds by destroying the evil Lich, Avon Delray.

The Hidden Temple

The adventurers moved on past the body of the slain naga guardian to encounter a magically locked door. After humoring Balfor and his lock picking prowess, Prizhoul led the way into the adjacent chamber.

Inside the chamber was a portal carved of dark stone in the shape of a many-headed dragon. To everyone's chagrin, Balfor was awestruck and approached the slithering heads, trying to discern their origin by engaging it in conversation. With no answer forthcoming, Balfor reached out his small, Halfling -- err, Kender, hand and touched the shimmering portal. He dissappeared in a wisp of curling smoke. After much debating about leaving the Kender to his demise, the others followed suit and soon found themselves on the steps of a hidden temple deep within the underdark.

Prizhoul slowly made his way into the large antechamber and discovered a pressure plate upon the floor that was an obvious trap to his trained eye. Gremag of Flinty Hills kept a close eye on Balfor who was making his way up the stairs to the second floor balcony. Meanwhile, Tim the Wizard and Liawyn, the cleric of Branchala, waited nervously in the shadows. Ulfgar, child of Reorx, moved in with the heavily armored Zander Maulsmith, both ready for trouble.

To keep Gremag from strangling the ever curious Kender, Tim cast a fly spell on Balfor to keep him entertained. Balfor immediately took flight over the room to discover the burnt corpse of a Kobold lying in the center of the chamber. The shiney ring on its finger was too much for the Kender and he flew low to pry it off. Jiggling the corpse, however, had the side effect of setting off the pressure plate trap beneath it and everyone dove for cover as arcs of electricity filled the room. After some groans and curses at the flying Kender, the party recovered and Prizhoul set off marking the chambers many pressure plates - afterall, temples and traps are his forte.

Liawyn and Ulfgar consulted on the evil feelings they had about this temple, and they both agreed that the place was desecrated; they began to search for a good place to hold a consecration ceremony. As they stepped up onto the temple's ceremony platform a swirl of dark shadows enveloped them. A cry echoed out from nearby as Balfor was dragged by slimey, black tenticles through a curtained doorway.
